Opera House at Sunset, Sydney
© 2000 Christine Krieg

Sydney’s Opera House is not only the city’s best known landmark but an Australian icon. Built on a spit at the eastern end of Circular Quay it is visible from many locations throughout the city.

This unique building of which was said it couldn’t be built, was designed by Jorn Utzon and took 16 years to build. It was plagued with construction delays and political difficulties leading to the architect’s eventual resignation before its completion in 1973. The Opera House is home to the arts, showcasing theatre, music, dance, film and opera. On weekends and for special events free music performances are held on the two tiered walkway leading to the forecourt. I highly recommend taking one of the daily guided tours for an in-depth look and feel.
