Cliffs in Kanangra, Blue Mountains
© 1992 Christine Krieg

Simon was my guide to the Blue Mountains and beyond, a spectacular expanse of valleys, cliffs, dramatic waterfalls and mountains.

As far as the eye could see, everything was covered in eucalypt forests. The oil expelled by all those gum trees gives the air a perpetual blue haze, hence the name of this popular recreational area just an hour west of Sydney. What struck me the most were the dramatic drops of these cliffs.

Simon explained with a straight face that rappelling down such cliffs and waterfalls was one of his favorite ways to unwind on the weekend. Here Simon is standing on a cliff in Kanangra National Park. The cascading mountain sides in the background form a valley Simon referred to as Murdering Gully. One guess where it got that name from.
