Drinking Milk, Kalimantan
© 2000 Christine Krieg

To say I was surprised, is an understatement. Up until then I had watched all the orangutan babies and the juveniles too, just stick their heads in the milk bucket. I had been told that orangutans were very intelligent, especially the ones that had been rescued from the illegal animal trade and had been kept as pets. They not only learn by imitation as human babies do, but look for new ways to find food and make their lives more pleasant, or in the case of juveniles more fun. This mother must have decided it was uncouth to stick her head into the bucket and instead dipped her hand in, then held it up high to let the milk pour into her mouth.
